Due to a back injury and a reliance on pain-killers, the original Darrin was not able to continue in his role. The network quickly replaced him with another actor with the same first name, but no explanation was given. This casting trick is frequently used in daytime television, but I guess prime time viewers are more observant. In the 80’s, a similar maneuver was performed with the lead singer of the next act. Pretty boy songwriter Clark Datchler vanished, but the audience did not seem to notice. Or care for that matter.
