cardiac arrest
I could spend all day on YouTube researching obscure videos for this blog. But this song stands out as a personal favorite. I remember purchasing the vinyl single at Sam Goody at The Galleria in White Plains. If you can look past the absurd hair and makeup of its band members, Device were the perfect 80’s ensemble. This band is actually a pet project for songwriter supreme Holly Knight. She was kind of the Cathy Dennis of her day. Her long list of writing credits on other artists tracks would make your head spin. Some may say she specializes in rock schlock, but you have to admire the lady scribe behind Love Is A Battlefield. In 1986, she would abandon her lucrative career as a song merchant for a shot at international pop stardom. Needless to say, her pop star plans went awry. But she did manage to leave behind this hidden classic. I used to play a game with my friends late at night called “Tacky Ladies From The Eighties”. I would lip-sync cult classics like this with tongue planted firmly in cheek. But I think it is harsh to discredit this tune based on her unfortunate fashion choices. In retrospect, Holly crafted the ideal soundtrack for my teen trauma.
