lost to logic
It was easy to be considered arty in America back in the early 80’s. You just had to strut around town in your head-to-toe black designer garment. It was also helpful to adopt an air of affected nonchalance. You could never be seen getting too excited by your surreal surroundings. And a perfectly styled bleach blond coiffure was the ideal topper. So you would think David Sylvian would have been big on the scene back then. But he was relegated to the fringe of the new romantic movement. In his defense, he wasn’t exactly chasing fast fame. Never one to conform to commercial expectations, he carved out a niche as the prince of pretension. His avant-garde musical experiments frequently left his audience in a state of disarray. He moved further from the mainstream as the years passed by. It is safe to say that he was never his record company’s cash cow. But he was always true to his alternative roots. And this track manages to mix jazz, ambient and a decent tune. Although he does proceed to exploit every video cliche you can imagine here.
