sweet revenge

It is always disconcerting when two of your favorite pop stars can’t get along. Although I adore Siobhan Fahey, she has left a trail of dead bodies in her wake. After she left Bananarama, the majority of her new compositions seemed to revolve around her departure and her blame for her former band-mates. I can only imagine the drama of being part of a successful girl group, but it did seem a little mean-spirited. When her second ensemble started to implode, it was her partner who had the last word. Although Marcella Detroit swore up and down that the next tune was not about SF, she did protest too much. However, she indicates an ambivalence towards her hostile feelings, and an understanding that they will not last forever. I have always been of the school of thought that you should own your negative sensations. How else can you work through them? So perhaps MD felt she needed to channel her rage into her art. Can you blame her? It’s always fun to engage in a little musical retribution. Technical note: The volume on this clip is very low!

I’m a fan of Shakespear’s Sister and Siobhan from her early days in Bananarama. So much so, I pimped Shakespear’s Sister on William Shakespeare’s 445th birthday (written as if Bill Shakespeare liked the video for “Stay” from Hormonally Yours.

I agree it is a shame that Siobhan and the Bananarama ladies (particularly Keren) have been so catty over the years. Then again, that’s part of their charm.
