swan song
There was a brief shining moment where the general public and I shared a collective taste in pop music. That zeitgeist probably occurred in 1985. By the end of the decade, the melodic synth-pop that I adored quickly fell out of fashion. Like a drunk who refuses to leave the bar after last call, I followed my favorite acts through the decline and fall. Often, their best material was released in this latter period, but it never reached a mass audience because they were no longer considered “cool”. In the summer of 1990, I was the last man standing in the audience for these German new wavers. They were able to enlist the talents of another eighties exile, Howard Jones to write this song for their big comeback. This ethereal tune was lush, atmospheric and catchy as hell. Back then, you needed to secure radio airplay to have any impact on the singles chart. Needless to say, disc jockeys did not add this track to their precious play-list. But I just did!
