fool’s paradise
Not very many literary figures have created their own adjective. Not to mention his own mood smiley on Myspace. But Alonso Quixanoe was no ordinary protagonist. He’s probably best known for his motto “to dream the impossible dream”. But he has come to represent a naive optimism that doesn’t take real world consequences into account. In other words, his fantasy life is in overdrive. Like a lot of the company I keep, he is in complete denial. But he is driven by his starry-eyed desire to do good deeds. He believes in this ideal universe so fiercely that it becomes genuine to him. His perception becomes his reality. I often wonder whether it is better to embrace the harsh truth of this world or to live life in a utopia of your own design. Believe me, I have tried both strategies. Regardless, this eternal question inspired one of my favorite pop stars to write this ode to the Man of La Mancha. Who knew new wave could provoke such deep thought?
